Then for quite a long time neither said any more.

8220;Look here, 8221; said the girl presently, 8220;I wonder did we ever really meet before? I had a sort of idea 8211; a sort of picture in my head 8211; of a boy and a girl, like us 8211; living somewhere quite different 8211; and doing all sorts of things. Perhaps it was only a dream. 8221;

8220;I 8217;ve had that same dream, I think, 8221; said Digory. 8220;About a boy and a girl, living next door 8211; and something about crawling among rafters. I remember the girl had a dirty face. 8221;

8220;Aren 8217;t you getting it mixed? In my dream it was the boy who had the dirty face. 8221;

8220;I can 8217;t remember the boy 8217;s face, 8221; said Digory: and then added, 8220;Hullo! What 8217;s that? 8221;

8220;Why! it 8217;s a guinea-pig, 8221; said the girl. And it was 8211; a fat guinea-pig, nosing about in the grass. But round the middle of the guinea-pig there ran a tape, and, tied on to it by the tape, was a bright yellow ring.

8220;Look! look, 8221; cried Digory, 8220;The ring! And look! You 8217;ve got one on your finger. And so have I. 8221;

The girl now sat up, really interested at last. They stared very hard at one another, trying to remember. And then, at exactly the same moment, she shouted out 8220;Mr Ketterley 8221; and he shouted out 8220;Uncle Andrew 8221;, and they knew who they were and began to remember the whole story. After a few minutes hard talking they had got it straight. Digory explained how beastly Uncle Andrew had been.

8220;What do we do now? 8221; said Polly. 8220;Take the guineapig and go home? 8221;

8220;There 8217;s no hurry, 8221; said Digory with a huge yawn.

8220;I think there is, 8221; said Polly. 8220;This place is too quiet. It 8217;s so 8211; so dreamy. You 8217;re almost asleep. If we once give in to it we shall just lie down and drowse for ever and ever. 8221;

8220;It 8217;s very nice here, 8221; said Digory.

8220;Yes, it is, 8221; said Polly.

8220;But we 8217;ve got to get back. 8221; She stood up and began to go cautiously towards the guinea-pig. But then she changed her mind.

8220;We might as well leave the guinea-pig, 8221; she said. 8220;It 8217;s perfectly happy here, and your uncle will only do something horrid to it if we take it home. 8221;

8220;I bet he would, 8221; answered Digory. 8220;Look at the way he 8217;s treated us. By the way, how do we get home? 8221;

8220;Go back into the pool, I expect. 8221;

They came and stood together at the edge looking down into the smooth water. It was full of the reflection of the green, leafy branches; they made it look very deep.

8220;We haven 8217;t any bathing things, 8221; said Polly.

8220;We shan 8217;t need them, silly, 8221; said Digory. 8220;We 8217;re going in with our clothes on. Don 8217;t you remember it didn 8217;t wet us on the way up? 8221;
