8220;Too true, mate, too true! 8221; said the Cabby. 8220;A 8216;ard world it was. I always did say those paving-stones weren 8217;t fair on any 8216;oss. That 8217;s Lunn 8217;on, that is. I didn 8217;t like it no more than what you did. You were a country 8216;oss, and I was a country man. Used to sing in the choir, I did, down at 8216;ome. But there wasn 8217;t a living for me there. 8221;

8220;Oh please, please, 8221; said Digory. 8220;Could we get on? The Lion 8217;s getting further and further away. And I do want to speak to him so dreadfully badly. 8221;

8220;Look 8216;ere, Strawberry, 8221; said the Cabby. 8220;This young gen 8217;leman 8216;as something on his mind that he wants to talk to the Lion about; 8216;im you call Aslan. Suppose you was to let 8216;im ride on your back (which 8216;e 8217;d take it very kindly) and trot 8216;im over to where the Lion is. And me and the little girl will be following along. 8221;

8220;Ride? 8221; said Strawberry. 8220;Oh, I remember now. That means sitting on my back. I remember there used to be a little one of you two-leggers who used to do that long ago. He used to have little hard, square lumps of some white stuff that he gave me. They tasted 8211; oh, wonderful, sweeter than grass. 8221;

8220;Ah, that 8217;d be sugar, 8221; said the Cabby.

8220;Please, Strawberry, 8221; begged Digory, 8220;do, do let me get up and take me to Aslan. 8221;

8220;Well, I don 8217;t mind, 8221; said the Horse. 8220;Not for once in a way. Up you get. 8221;

8220;Good old Strawberry, 8221; said the Cabby. 8220; 8216;Ere, young 8216;un, I 8217;ll give you a lift. 8221; Digory was soon on Strawberry 8217;s back, and quite comfortable, for he had ridden bare-back before on his own pony.

8220;Now, do gee up, Strawberry, 8221; he said.

8220;You don 8217;t happen to have a bit of that white stuff about you, I suppose? 8221; said the Horse.

8220;No. I 8217;m afraid I haven 8217;t, 8221; said Digory.

8220;Well, it can 8217;t be helped, 8221; said Strawberry, and off they went.

At that moment a large Bulldog, who had been sniffing and staring very hard, said:

8220;Look. Isn 8217;t there another of these queer creatures over there, beside the river, under the trees? 8221;
