这篇散文讲了各种各样的沉默，有因腹中空空引起的沉默，有因冷漠绝望引起的沉默，有阅历丰富但深思不语的沉默…… 沉默表现形式不同，内涵更是不尽相同。文章对沉默的分析很有启发意义。
从译法上来讲，由于文章的写法比较有特点，翻译还是有一定难度的。首先文章虽然讲的是人的各种各样的沉默，但文中并没有明确地说出谁，连“人”字都少有。这给翻译造成的困难是显而易见的。中文可以随心所欲地像本文这样使用无主句，英文却万万行不通。每句必须要有主、谓才算完整。因此，译文只能尽可能地做到接近原文的意思，这就是翻译上所说的任何译文都只能是一种compromise，谁都不敢说绝对的话。

Indeed, for a living being there is no such thing as true silence, for silence itself is a revelation of the mind and the heart, an echo of the soul of a different form.
Some people use silence as a disguise of the emptiness of the head.
Some use it as a means to depict their disorientation and melancholy.
And some use it as a way of expressing their angers and sorrows.
Silence usually is ephemeral. It reminds one of the bronze bells dangling from a pagoda 8221;s eaves; on windless days they are a decoration upon the age-weathered beauty, but with wind they give out wonderful tinkling and jingling metallurgic sounds, as if echoing age-old stories of long, long ago
Do you not think the same of silent people?
they say that 8220;silence is golden 8221;, but of what nature is this 8220;gold 8221;? It can include integrity, honesty and kindness; it can stand for indifference to and detachment from fame and fortune; but it can also act as an excuse for hypocrisy, slyness and cowardice the glittering of gold may not necessarily be the most brilliant lustre in the world.
Can it be that permanent silence is only represented by death?
Perhaps even death cannot represent true silence, for the carrier of the soul can turn into dust, so that the sincere and wise voices from the bottom of the heart will trigger long-lasting echoes in the seas of human hearts
沉默(节选二)
其实，对活着的生命而言，真正的沉默是不存在的。沉默本身也是一种思想和心境的流露，是灵魂的另一种形式的回声。
有的人以沉默掩饰思想的空虚。
有的人以沉默叙述迷茫和惆怅。
有的人以沉默表达内心的愤怒和忧伤。
……
沉默常常是暂时的。就像古塔檐角下的铜铃，无风时，它们只是一种古色古香的装饰，一起风，它们便会发出奇妙的金属音响，似乎是许多古老故事的悠远的回声……
沉默的人们不也一样?
“沉默是金”，是怎样的一种“金”呢? 这个“金”字中，可以包含正直、善良，可以代表淡泊、超脱，也可以是虚伪、圆滑、怯懦的一种托辞……金子的光泽，未必是世界上最动人的光泽。
是不是只有死亡才是永远的沉默?
也许，死亡也未必是真正的沉默，灵魂的载体可以化为尘土，那些真诚睿智的心声，却会长久地在人心的海洋中引起悠长的回声……-
1.其实……是灵魂的另一种形式的回声。
其实：这个词是承上启下的。英文里indeed这个词起的也是这个作用。人们经常把indeed理解为“的确”，这个意思只是indeed很多用法里的一个。这样的词在用的时候应当找一本英文的learner 8221;s dictionary认真地翻阅一下。这里不妨从Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English上摘两个例句看一看：Did you hear the explosion? Indeed I did. / I didn 8221;t mind. Indeed, I was pleased.前一句里的indeed是“当然”的意思，用来加重语气;后一句里的indeed是“甚至还……”的意思，表示“不但不……，而且还……”。
思想和心境：英文用mind来代表思想，用heart来代表感情。
流露：revelation是“表露”、“揭示”之意。
2.有的人……以沉默表达内心的愤怒和忧伤。
有的人：第一句里用了some people，第二句和第三句就不用重复了，只用some即可。
3.沉默常常是暂时的。……沉默的人们不也一样?
常常：初学英文的朋友往往会按照中文的意思来想英文是哪个词，于是“常常”就是often，“通常”就是usually。而实际上不论是哪个词，都应当从上下文来确定它的意思，即使如often和usually这样简单的词也应当这样。这篇文章通篇都在讲各种各样的“沉默”，让人觉得“沉默”常在，所以这个句子里“常常”就译成了usually。
